Transportation of Pets to EU Countries

Passengers traveling with animals from non-EU countries to the EU must comply with the requirements for animal transportation in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 998/2003, which includes the following:

Identification:

The transported animal must be identified with a transponder (microchip) that meets ISO 11784 standards and can be read by a device compatible with ISO 11785.
If the transponder does not meet these requirements, the owner must provide the necessary equipment for reading it.
Identification of the animal must be performed before rabies vaccination.

Veterinary Health Certificate (Annex IV, EU Regulation No. 577/2013):

The animal must be accompanied by a health certificate issued by an official veterinarian designated by the competent authority of the country of origin, or, in the case of re-entry into the EU, by an EU-type passport confirming valid rabies vaccination or revaccination in accordance with health standards.
The health certificate must also be accompanied by a declaration signed by the owner (Annex IV, Sections A and B, EU Regulation No. 577/2013), confirming that the movement of the animal is non-commercial.
The veterinary certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue.

Rabies Vaccination:

The animal must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days and at most 1 year before travel.
The animal must also undergo a blood test to determine the level of protective antibodies to verify the effectiveness of the rabies vaccination.
This test must be performed at least 30 days after vaccination and at least 3 months before travel, at a laboratory authorized by the EU.
The animal may travel to the EU only if the rabies antibody titer is at least 0.5 IU/ml.
For information about approved laboratories, visit:
http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/liveanimals/pets/approval_en.htm

Note:
This three-month waiting period does not apply in cases of re-entry into the EU of an animal whose passport confirms a successful antibody titer test before it left EU territory.

Animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies, have not undergone a serological test for antibody verification, or are younger than seven (7) months are not accepted for transport.
If the animal does not meet EU veterinary health requirements, the Veterinary Service at the airport may refuse entry into the EU and send the animal back to the country of origin, with all expenses borne by the owner accompanying the animal.

Certain breeds of dogs and cats are considered dangerous and are prohibited in some EU countries.
We recommend that passengers check the list of restricted breeds before traveling to their destination country.
